Digital Matter’s Hawk IoT Data Logger Named 2025 Australian Good Design Award Gold Winner for Engineering Excellence

The recognition highlights the company’s commitment to flexible, sustainable, and high-performance IoT hardware innovation.

Digital Matter, a global leader in IoT hardware solutions, today announced that its Hawk IoT Datalogger has won Gold for Engineering Design at the 2025 Australian Good Design Awards.

The accolade highlights Digital Matter’s ongoing commitment to design and engineering excellence – delivering powerful IoT hardware solutions that help industries worldwide connect and protect the assets that matter.

This year’s Good Design Awards centered around the theme “Design for Better,” celebrating projects that drive positive change for people, planet, and prosperity. The Hawk was recognised as a standout example of engineering design, with its rugged IP68- and IK-rated build quality ensuring reliable performance even in the harshest conditions.

“Winning a Good Design Award is incredible recognition of the innovation and dedication that defines Digital Matter,” said Loic Barancourt, CEO of Digital Matter. “The Hawk embodies our vision of delivering hardware that is flexible, reliable, and sustainable. It enables our partners and their customers to solve real-world challenges – from conserving water and improving crop yields, to monitoring utilities and supporting conservation – all with the durability needed to thrive in the harshest environments.”

The Hawk was developed to address a longstanding challenge in remote monitoring: how to balance flexibility, power efficiency, and cost in a single device. Millions of remote sensors exist worldwide, each with unique power and communication requirements. The Hawk addresses this through a modular design built around swappable I/O Cards, allowing customers to customise compatibility for their specific sensors without redesigning the core device.

This architecture enables seamless integration with a wide range of sensors – from soil moisture probes and pressure sensors to ultrasonic range sensors and weather stations – while remaining highly competitive by leveraging Digital Matter’s 25 years of design expertise and the scale achieved through producing large volumes of battery-powered trackers each year.

Already deployed across diverse applications, the Hawk is proving its ability to improve ROI and support sustainability. In agriculture, farmers are using the Hawk to optimise irrigation, conserve water, and improve yields through soil moisture monitoring. Utilities are relying on it for remote water meter readings and to detect leaks in sewers and drains before they become costly failures.

Conservation organizations are applying the device to non-invasively monitor ecosystems and wildlife, whether tracking beehive health or water quality in river systems. Additionally, the Hawk can even function as a Bluetooth Gateway, delivering real-time visibility of small assets like tools and equipment.

“The Digital Matter Hawk is a robust and modular IoT data logger and sensor hub. Its purpose is to provide a flexible and unique approach to remote monitoring, enabling users to connect, protect, and gain visibility over their critical assets and environmental conditions. Really clever product and a brilliant showcase of what good design can bring to a product like this. Well done,” said The Good Design Awards Jury.

The 2025 Good Design Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney.
